It’s main purpose was to target web spam. This means that if you used to get thousands+ of links from non related sites using automated software the chances are your site would have had its rankings drop significantly.

This new Google algorithm update has lead to SEOs testing new ways that are effective for ranking their sites. One method that has proven popular is microsites.

This is where you purchase a site and build a site that’s relevant to your main site. For example if you had a website based on web design a good idea would be to purchase a web design domain name and set up a blog on it.

You could then post blogs on it related to web design and link back to your main site. It’s important though to host the microsite on a different server from your main domain and when you link to your main site use a vary of anchor text for example; www.domain.com, keyword 1, keyword 2, http://www.domain.com and click here.

If you overuse anchor text you can be penalized. Try and keep your keyword anchor text to less than 40%.

With the posts that you put on your microsite it’s important that they are unique and of good quality. Do not use article spinning software as Google can pick up on this and penalize your site for doing so.

Imagine you want to create a design for a mobile website. Chances are, unless we are designing for a single device, we will quickly find a common problem experienced by all designers working with mobile devices, find out what ratios actually display a mobile device.

For example:

The iPhone is 480 pixels high and 320 pixels wide.

Many devices Nokia N-Series is 320 pixels high and 240 pixels wide.

In this circumstance, you may think that it is really essential to design independently for different screen sizes or to create a design for each device. Tiny: 84px, 96px, 101px, 128px, 130px

Small: 160px, 176px

Medium: 208px, 220px, 240px

Large: 320px, 360px, 480px +

Desktop: 800px +

These groupings are, of course, completely arbitrary and the requirements of a project may dictate an entirely different set. For example, 320 pixels for the iPhone, more than 240 pixels for latest mobile browsers and 128 pixels for older devices. Ultimately, the definition of clusters of devices really comes down to the objectives and need for the project.
